The compound name Ēl ‘Elyōn 'God Most High' occurs in Genesis 14.18–19 as the god whose priest was Melchizedek (King of Righteousness, King of Jerusalem). The form appears again almost immediately in verse 22, used by Abraham in an oath to the King of Sodom.
It has been suggested that the reference to 'Ēl ‘Elyōn maker of heaven and earth' in Genesis 14:19 and 22 reflects the belief that ‘Elyōn was progenitor of Ouranus and Gê, as suggested in Philo of Byblos's account of Phoenician History.

One of the first names of the God of Israel was El, (e.g., Gen 33:20) the main God of the Canaanites and Phoenicians. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Phoenicia
El or Il was the supreme god, the father of humankind and all creatures and the husband of the Goddess Asherah as attested in the tablets of Ugarit. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/El_%28god%29

(The LORD said to Abram) ALL PEOPLES OF THE EARTH WILL BE BLESSED THROUGH YOU. (Gen 12:3)
According to many Bibles Abraham blessed the King of Jerusalem aka the King of Righteousness (Melchi-zedek in Hebrew). Abraham paid a tithe to this King of Righteousness.
Abraham's children, Isaac and Ishmael would become the ancestors of Jews and Arabs today. Isra-el means "one who wrestles w/ El" (El = the God of the most high). Isaac's son Jacob was renamed Israel.
The Arabic term for God is Allah. Arabs worshipped many gods until the Prophet Mohammed came (600 years after Jesus) and taught them to worship one God as Jews and Christians do.

Originally, the word "sermon" meant you'd have no idea what was coming next. It was theological but also political and economical and obviously highly creative because if it didn't engage, then you wouldn't listen and you wouldn't be provoked or challenged or comforted. So in some ways for me my life's passion is to pursue this art form. Pump some electricity into it.
